Q: What is the environmental impact of improperly disposed electronic waste?

A: Electronics are complex devices which are made of a wide variety of material constituents. Some of the constituents, such as lead, nickel, cadmium, and mercury, could pose risks to human health or the environment.

Q: What are the benefits to responsibly recycling E-Waste?

A: Recycling one million laptops saves the energy equivalent to the electricity used by 3,657 US homes in a year. One metric ton of circuit boards can contain 40 to 800 times the amount of gold and 30 to 40 times the amount of copper mined from one metric ton of ore in the US.

Q: What materials can GreenChip help recover from recycled electronics?

A: Electronics are made from valuable resources such as precious metals, copper, and plastics - all of which require energy to mine and process. Recovering these materials conserves energy, avoids air and water pollutions and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Electronic devices contain a number of different metals – gold, silver, platinum, palladium, copper, tin, and zinc – that are recovered in the recycling process. GreenChip also recovers plastic throughout the recycling process.

Q: Can my recycled electronics become new products again?

A: Yes, recovered metals are used by a number of different industries such as jewelry, plating, electronics, automotive, and art foundries. Recovered plastics are recycled into plastic components for new electronic devices or other plastic products such as garden furniture, license plate frames, non-food containers, and replacement automotive parts.

Q: How can I have an Electronics Recycling event in my neighborhood?

A: In order to make e-waste recycling accessible and convenient to New York City residents, GreenChip can assist you in hosting an event at your location. Spreading awareness is easy, just contact a GreenChip E-waste specialist to get started.

Q: Is my personal information on my computer safe for disposal?

A: GreenChips protects the data and personal information on electronics from the point of collection, through transport and processing. We adhere to the most up-to-date security standards and practices and offer destruction certified to Department of Defense standards.

Q: How does the NYS Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act affect me?

A: NYS consumers may now recycle electronic waste, such as computers, computer peripherals, televisions, small scale servers, and small electronic equipment, etc., in an environmentally responsible manner.
